Hey! My name is Emily Parsons and I’m a sophomore. I was inspired to pursue teaching in high school when I worked as an assistant taekwondo instructor for students aged preschool to adult, the majority being in middle school. I loved the feeling of passing on knowledge and watching people use and further themselves with it. I loved knowing that the children looked up to me and complementing me on being a good teacher. By junior year of high school, I knew that I wanted to be a middle school teacher. I initially started out as an elementary education major, with the intent on that being my gateway to middle school. During my first year, my advisor said that I would be better off in secondary education. I chose English as my second major not only because I was one of the quiet bookish ones in the classroom but also because I have had English teachers that were great influences for me and really helped me grow up. As I said in class, my hobbies are guitar, piano, singing, rugby and story writing. I hope to be a writer as well as a teacher.
ReplyDeleteWe have so much in common, Emily! I love playing guitar, piano, and singing as well.
DeleteHello everyone! My name is Kelsey Buchanan and I am a double major in art and education with a minor in art history. I am looking to get my certification in K-12 for art education. Last semester I took child development and I am looking forward to seeing the similarities and differences with adolescent development. Originally, I am from Schuylerville, New York where I attended school in the Schuylerville Center School District and graduated with one hundred and thirty students. I would estimate that over sixty percent of my fellow graduates have known each other since day one of kindergarten. I have always known that I wanted to be a teacher. In ninth grade I had two foot surgeries which kept me from attending gym class and instead gave me a study hall. I used this extra study hall to help a student with Down Syndrome in his art class. This experience solidified teaching as well as determining the art aspect of it. Someone once told me that the best art teacher isn’t a teacher who likes art, but an artist that loves to teach. I would definitely self-classify as an artist who loves to teach. Speaking on art, I’ve had my work chosen from over eight hundred pieces to be shown with one hundred selected pieces in a museum for a student show. I also won one of the three awards at that particular show. This piece will be in Dion soon too! I look forward to further getting to know you all!
ReplyDeleteMy name is Bailey Jeffko and I'm a 19-year-old sophomore here. I am originally from Canton, Connecticut but I like to call Vermont my second home. I have a dog named Callie, a wonderful younger sister named Camy, and two parents that I absolutely adore. I am a secondary education and Spanish double major and have known that I have wanted to be a teacher for my entire life. I am in the Honors College and my favorite classes are Spanish and music classes. Moreover, I'm a participant of the a cappella group, “Sleepless Knights” on campus. The members of “Sleepless Knights” are like a second family to me and I can’t imagine my college experience without them. My passion is music and I have been singing ever since I was young. I began playing piano in the fifth grade and picked up acoustic guitar in 8th grade when my parents surprised me with one for Christmas. I also have a love for writing music and have a YouTube channel in which I post singing videos of my original songs. One of my original songs, titled “26 Angels”, about the unfortunate Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, received over 250,000 views on YouTube and the positive response from that song inspired me to write even more songs. In the future, I hope to continue my music career, while also pursuing my dream of becoming a teacher.
ReplyDeleteI had a chance to listen to your song Bailey, "26 Angels," and it was incredibly powerful! I'm glad to see so many people in our class that are passionate about music as well!
DeleteHi everyone, I'm Henry Davies and I'm a 20-year-old sophomore. I'm majoring in English and, of course, Secondary Ed. I'm from Needham, Massachusetts, which is like 20 minutes outside of Boston. I started going to boarding school in 7th grade in Lake Placid, New York, which is where the 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympics were held. I spent three years there and in 10th grade I went to another boarding school in Bethlehem New Hampshire. I have an older brother named Sam who graduated from Saint Mikes last year, and a younger sister named Mae who is a junior in high school. I also have a yellow lab named Harley, who is incredibly cute. I like to ski and play soccer, as well as read and write.
ReplyDeleteI'm from Needham too! You don't happen to have a brother named Kevin, do you?
ReplyDeleteHello everyone, my name is Daniel Brogan, and I'm a sophomore. I am from Dennis Massachusetts, but I feel safe to call Vermont home for the time being. I have two older siblings, my brother Mike, and my sister, Kristen. I also live with my Gram and my Mom, both of which are my rocks in life.
ReplyDeleteDuring my free time, I love to play the drum set. I have been playing for about 12 years now, and I absolutely love playing jazz and fusion drumming. Additionally, I love to hike whenever I am able to. Last year, I set up a charity hike (called the Hikeothon) to raise money for HOPE Works (a local organization that helps survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence). I strongly recommend hiking along the Appalachian trail for a long period of time if you are trying to find yourself.
My biggest passion in life is education. In high school, I helped tutor students with learning disabilities and behavioral disabilities, and I have never felt so rewarded and fulfilled in my life. During my senior year of high school, I also served as a full voting member on the Massachusetts Board of Elementary & Secondary Education. I had the truly humbling experience of working with so many inspiring people across the country, and this further invigorated my passion for education.
I am so excited to learn and grow with people who also hold the same passion for education, and I cannot wait to collaborate with everyone in this class!
I hope to hike the Appalachian trail sometime in the next few years. I love how you raised money for HOPE Works while doing it!
DeleteHi everyone!
ReplyDeleteMy name is Emma Woodruff and I'm a sophomore from Grand Rapids, Michigan. I grew up in Alaska, though, so I'm a hopeless ski bum and lover of the snow and winter. I'm a Secondary Ed and English double major and I'm really excited to learn more about what it takes to be a teacher this semester. I was named after the book Emma by Jane Austen, and my mom loves to joke that that it is what stems my love of classic literature. I really do love to read.
Outside of the classroom, I'm vary passionate about community service. I'm a MOVE CORE Team member for Special Events, so I'm in charge of running First-Year Apple Picking, the three Blood Drives, and the two Serve-A-Thons we have every year. I am also a mentor for the sassiest eight year old in the world through the Little Brother/Little Sister program. Ask anyone close to me and they'll tell you that Bri really has become my little sister. I spend at least four hours with her every week and she's the ray of sunshine that makes my day every time I get to see her. Bri and I like to spend our Monday nights listening to Taylor Swift and coloring.
I am also a campus tour guide during the school year and a summer camp counselor during the summer. I actually just got a promotion at camp, so I am super excited to get back there for the summer! Overall, I'm just super excited for this semester and ready to take on the responsibility of being a teacher. More than anything, I just really want to make a positive difference in my students' lives someday, and I think this class is going to teach us a lot of the information that will be necessary to make that dream a reality.
Hello everyone! My name is Olivia Bryce and I am a sophomore here at Saint Michael’s College with a double major in Secondary Education and Mathematics. I’m from Cambridge, Vermont, and I graduated from Lamoille Union High School in 2014. In high school I always helped classmates with their math homework, then one day a friend of mine said, “Hey, I like that you explained to me how to do this, rather than doing it for me. Have you ever thought of becoming a math teacher?” That’s when it all started. During high school I privately tutored a 6th grade home schooled student who needed more advanced math than what was offered in her public school. When I was a senior in high school I had an independent study helping teach a 9th grade Algebra class, which was an incredible experience to observe different teaching styles, technology integration, and hands-on activities pertaining to mathematics. I’ve also done some math instruction when being a substitute teacher at Lamoille Union Middle School. I got to teach exponent rules to a group of seventh and eighth graders, which was by far one of my favorite teaching experiences. The wonderful thing about this group of middle schoolers is that they were excited about learning and you could tell because they asked great questions and genuinely wanted to understand the reason why a mathematical concept is true.
ReplyDeleteAt Saint Michael’s College I am a peer tutor for a calculus class, which I’ve been doing for the past 3 semesters. I’ve found that my passion for teaching math roots from the infamous “lightbulb moment” we all hear about. When a student understands a concept you can see it in the way their facial expression changes, as they see math in a new light. This moment is what makes me so happy and it is the reason I love teaching.
Outside the classroom I love to get involved in extracurricular activities around campus. I am the Co-President of the Random Acts of Kindness Club, I’m a tour guide, I volunteer with MOVE, I have a radio show at the campus radio station, I’m involved in LEAP, and as I mentioned earlier I am a peer tutor. In addition, I love to play the ukulele, solve Rubik’s cubes, swim laps, play soccer, and spend time with my three cats at home. I also really love Christmas and the Fourth of July.
Overall, I’m very excited to be diving into the world of education through Adolescent Development. Working with an ELL student is going to be a wonderful learning experience, and although I am nervous about the language barrier, I am excited to see just how much mathematics is a universal language!
Hello fellow bloggers
ReplyDeleteMy name is Ben Davis, I'm a sophomore from Fryeburg Maine. I already here the "where's that?" questions. Don't worry, no one knows where Fryeburg Maine is which is totally fine! I'm a Secondary Ed and History double major and have recently just switched in to these majors. This is exciting but I'm also very nervous.
I'm also apart of the Men's Basketball Team at Saint Mike's and basketball is my life. I love being apart of the team because it is like a brotherhood away from home. I have awful luck with injuries, as I've broken my leg twice and torn my ACL twice. I'm not sure how to avoid these injuries but they also have become a huge part of my life.
I have a younger brother and a younger sister. My sister is a senior in high school and my little brother is a junior high school. They are all that matter to me! To add off of my family, both my mom and both grandparent's were professors at their respective universities. I'm extremely excited to learn about how to teach and become a teach. I feel like it runs in my blood.
Hi everyone! My name is Megan and I'm a sophomore History and Secondary Education major! I didn't fully realize I wanted to be a teacher until my senior year of high school. I always thought it would be fun, but I didn't truly realize my passion until I got to intern with Mrs. Willard who is a middle school Special Education teacher. I worked with a classroom of 9 kids in 6-9 grade every day on various subjects. Mrs. Willard handled the chaos that was her classroom (and the rest of the school for that matter) with ease and I truly hope to be half the teacher she is. My dream is to teach middle school history or Special Education.
ReplyDeleteOriginally, I'm from Middletown, Pennsylvania, but, as I mentioned in my Thinglink presentation, I moved to Milton, VT 15 days before the start of freshman year. In 2013, I was blessed with the opportunity to own the most perfect (for me) horse, Aspen. Along with my horse, I have two dogs that I couldn't imagine life without. I am also a former competitive archer and competed in multiple state, regional, and even nationally sanctioned competitions. With archery came the opportunity to be an assistant coach alongside of my coaches during our Sunday night youth archery program. Working with those children was wonderful and I hope to return to this aspect of teaching as well someday.
Hey Adolescent Dev Fam!
ReplyDeleteMy name is Patrick Morrissey and I like to go by Patrick or Pat, whichever you prefer is fine. I grew up in Farmington, CT and am a Secondary Education/History double major at Saint Mikes. I'd like to think I've managed to do quite a lot in my 19 years and I imagine all of you have way more experiences then you can fit into 200 words. Outside of Education, my main three interests are music, airsoft and skateboarding/snowboarding. The ladder two I like to group together as they complement each other seasonally. With regards to music, I play the violin, tuba, and guitar, the first two I've played for over a decade each, but in college I've dedicated most of my time to playing guitar and have let that become my main musical focus. Airosft is something I've picked up over the past summer and have come to enjoy due to its focus on teamwork and it's unique style of play. Snowboarding and skateboard though are by far my favorite activities to partake in, I try to be on a board as much as possible. I've been on snow 27 days already this season to give you some perspective.
When I'm up at Saint Mike's I'm an active member and soon to be officer of ShredMC, I currently film and make short edits of our students skiing and snowboarding. This season I'm also aspiring to make a short movie of the skiers and snowboarders on campus that will premiere at the end of the semester. On top of that I also teach snowboarding at Bolton Valley, and I can definitely say teaching snowboarding is what got me into the idea of becoming an educator. Seeing and helping others overcome problems and succeed is by far my favorite form of human interaction. Teaching in any form is rich with these moments and I can already tell that being in a classroom will bring me as much joy as being on a board. So to say the least I'm excited to become an educator and I look forward to what this semester will bring!
Hello class,
ReplyDeleteMy name is McKenzie McNamara and I am a current sophomore from Pembroke Massachusetts. I have moved from Massachusetts to Vermont to study as an Undergraduate at Saint Michael’s College. I am currently a Mathematics major with intended minors in Secondary Education, Classics, and Sociology. With this collection of interests I hope to continue onto a graduate program in Higher Education and Student Affairs Administration. Currently on campus I am a Resident Assistant and work in the Admissions Office as a Tour Guide. I love working in a First Year residence hall where I aid students as they transition into college. As a Tour Guide I enjoy speaking to perspective student as they are on a journey to find a school that they will one day call home. I am also a member of the Varsity Volleyball team on campus. I am a starter for the team and love working with the team to improve skills and drive each other to work hard.
Outside of school I have various interests. I love the outdoors. But I am not the outdoorsy type. I like to go for walks in the woods and sit in my hammock. I also love to swim and teach swim lessons. I also enjoy arts and crafts such as sewing, knitting, and coloring.
My name is Rebecca Weisburgh and I am currently a sophomore at Saint Michael’s College. I was born in South Burlington, Vermont, which is about two miles from here. I have lived in Vermont for the entirety of my life. I went to South Burlington High School and am currently studying Secondary Education and Mathematics. I am currently enrolled in a class to receive my middle school endorsement, so I can achieve my goal of becoming a middle school math teacher. Before my senior year of high school, I absolutely refused to become a teacher, but now it is the only career I can see myself pursuing. I also enjoy many things outside of school and math. Rugby is a one of the biggest parts of my life. I started my sophomore year of high school and still play. Fun fact: we are ranked 7th in the nation for D2! I also love volunteering and being outside. My job is another big part of my life. I work at the Imagine After School program at Allen Brook School and I absolutely love it. I brag about my kids all the time and love what I do.
